Some of the key tasks this month are... winter pruning wisteria and cutting back other climbers such as ivy and Virginia creeper; pruning hybrid tea, floribunda, shrub and climbing roses; pruning late-summer flowering (Group 3) clematis back to the lowest pair of strong buds; pruning last years growth from perennials such as Sedum and Acanthus (but wait and don't prune Salvias yet!); prune deciduous late-flowering shrubs such as Buddleija davidii, hardy Fuchsias, Lavatera; and pruning autumn flowering raspberries (cut all stems down to the base) and blackcurrants (cut out up to a third of the oldest stems down at the base).
